Morocco vs Croatia Preview

Morocco has only qualified for the World Cup once since 2000, in Russia. Despite collecting just one point from three group matches, the African nation fared better than their record suggests, losing 1-0 to Portugal and being denied a triumph over Spain by an injury-time equalizer.

Morocco has underperformed at the Africa Cup of Nations, finishing in the last 16 and quarterfinals, although they enter this competition on a five-match unbeaten streak. They’ve beaten South Africa, Chile, and Georgia and tied Paraguay in September.

Walid Regragui, whose squad is now rated 22nd in the FIFA World Rankings, is pleased with his team’s trajectory and doesn’t expect Belgium or Croatia to qualify for the knockout stages. The latter are playing their first World Cup match since falling to France 4-2 in the final four years ago.

A lucky draw and overachieving contributed to Croatia’s run, and there are signs they’re returning back to form after losing in the last 16 at Euro 2020. Zlatko Dalic’s squad won four straight UEFA Nations League matches, including an away win over France, to top a group with Denmark and Austria.

Since losing 5-3 to Spain at Euro 2020, Croatia has lost just once in 16 games, a loss they avenged by winning 3-1 in Austria. Andrej Kramaric scored the only goal in Croatia’s 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia last Wednesday.

Morocco vs Croatia Team News

Even though Sofyan Amrabat is set to return to the starting lineup in the middle of the field, Regragui is likely to go with a large portion of the team that performed so well in a 3-0 win against Georgia.

It is expected that Noussair Mazraoui will fill in at left-back, with Achraf Hakimi guaranteed to play on the right, and the other starting positions remaining the same for the most part.

Romain Saiss will lead the team as captain and play center defense with Nayef Aguerd, and Youssef En-Nesyri will have Hakim Ziyech on his side.

Meanwhile, Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic are locked to start in the middle for Croatia, and Dalic is anticipated to start most of the same team that defeated Austria in September.

Dalic’s greatest decision appears to be between Bruno Petkovic and Andrej Kramaric for a starting spot in attack, with Josip Stanisic expected to start at right back.

Morocco vs Croatia Prediction

There is no room for Croatian complacency despite the strength of their team, as Morocco is something of an unknown. But we think the European nation has too much quality on both sides of the field to win what should be an exciting match.
