After failing Barcelona test, Dest joins USMNT friends at PSV

Sergiño Dest returns to Barcelona this summer with a fresh start after a disappointing loan at AC Milan last season. Two months later, he’s leaving again.

PSV has a €11 million option to buy Dest permanently after he signed a season-long loan on Monday.

following failing to play for AC Milan in January, the 22-year-old was given another shot by Barcelona for the 2023-24 season.

“[Barcelona manager Xavi] just told me, ‘I’ll give you a fair chance to prove yourself,’” Dest stated last month. He said, “I think you have qualities, but it’s up to you, you have to show me.”

Dest played all three games in Barcelona’s U.S. trip but hasn’t played since. He returned to the Eredivisie after rising at Ajax before joining Barcelona in 2020.

USMNT teammates join Dest at PSV

After Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman, Dest is the third U.S. men’s national team player to join PSV this summer.

This is no coincidence, as Earnie Stewart was U.S. Soccer’s sporting director before joining the Dutch team.

“Sergiño Dest offered to join us, which we appreciated. He is a creative and talented defender whose explosive force and offensive intents can benefit the team.” Stewart remarked in the club release.

Dest added: “I like PSV’s football style. It suits me wonderfully. I return to Holland. I’m still the same player, but I’ve gained experience and hopefully efficiency.”

Dest was already in PSV’s 22-man squad for Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg at Rangers. The two-leg winner advances to the group stage.
