Barcelona may sign Real Sociedad midfielder Brais Mendez in January. The 26-year-old began his career at Celta Vigo, making 166 games in all competitions and scored 22 goals and 18 assists.
Mendez joined Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022 and has starred in 62 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 13 assists.
The Spaniard has five goals and five assists in 15 games this season, compared to 11 and 8 in 47 last season.
After signing a six-year contract, Mendez has five years left on his contract, but his good performances have raised questions about his future.
According to Fichajes, Barcelona is a big fan of the midfielder and may sign him in the winter. The source says Tottenham Hotspur are also interested, but Barcelona is’seriously considering making a bid’ in 2024.
This season, Mendez has two goals and four assists in 12 La Liga games and three goals and one assist in three Champions League games.
The four-time Spain international plays central midfield for Real Sociedad, but he has also played off the right and through the middle in 2023-24.
Barcelona boss Xavi is set to recruit at least one new central midfielder next year due to a lack of experienced players.
After Sergio Busquets left, Oriol Romeu was re-signed over the summer, and Ilkay Gundogan joined on a free from Manchester City before the new season.
Fermin Lopez has become a first-team player this season, while Frenkie de Jong is poised to sign a new contract.
Gavi, 19, and Pedri, 20, are two of the world’s top young midfielders, but the latter has had injury issues early in his career, while Marc Casado, Unai Hernandez, Aleix Garrido, and Angel Alarcon lack experience.
As Barcelona lost 1-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday, Xavi was quite critical.
