In three attempts away from home, Bayern have never beaten the Rossoneri, like Inter this weekend. On Wednesday’s opponents’ visit to the Italian peninsula, the perennial Bundesliga champions have won every time – the most recent being a 1-0 win in 2011, when Thomas Muller was among those who made the trip.

After losing to Chelsea in the 2012 final and to Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning team the previous year, Bayern won the Champions League trophy in 2020 despite losing to Chelsea in the 2012 final.

Before a couple of recent setbacks, Bayern had moved seamlessly into their post-Lewandowski era at the start of this season – at least by their own standards. Yann Sommer pulled off a record-breaking 19 saves against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the fourth round of the new Bundesliga season.

It wasn’t until a week later that Julian Nagelsmann’s side were thwarted again, as a disciplined Union Berlin outfit managed to hold them to the same scoreline. The third-placed Bayern have already scored 26 goals this term, scoring five each against Leipzig and Viktoria Koln, six against Eintracht Frankfurt, and seven against Bochum.
