With Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis, Mohammed Kudus and Steven Bergwijn coming up with the goods in Amsterdam, the Eredivisie champions also taught Rangers a lesson.

With Kudus scoring a brace in the 5-0 Eredivisie victory over Heerenveen, The Dutch champions have shown no signs of a post-Erik ten Hag hangover this term. It was Schreuder’s side who kept five clean sheets in all tournaments since their last loss, which came to Rangers, and they are now on a five-match winning streak in all competitions.

Ajax have also only suffered two losses in all European competitions in the last 25 games, but their most recent loss was at Anfield in 2020 – six weeks after the Reds also won by a solitary goal in Amsterdam.

With Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones all out, Klopp is left with only Thiago Alcantara to cover the midfield. Fabio Carvalho is likely to push into contention as he has recovered from a dead leg, but Ibrahima Konate, Calvin Ramsay, and Caoimhin Kelleher are all ill, and the latter two are likely to miss out. Andy Robertson sustained a knee injury against Napoli.

The return of Thiago to fitness could lead Klopp to drop James Milner from the starting line-up. Joel Matip is expected to replace Joe Gomez at the back. The Liverpool manager may still rejig his attacking line by replacing Mohamed Salah with Diogo Jota this Sunday against Chelsea.

After scoring Ajax’s fourth in their match against Rangers, Bergwijn pulled up injured, but was given the green light to return to action against Heerenveen. Ajax left-back Owen Wijndal has returned to training following an ankle injury, but the clash with Liverpool will come too soon for him. Calvin Bassey was also sent off during Ajax’s 5-0 win over Heerenveen.

Despite sustaining no serious damage, Schreuder said after the game that the centre-back could play this week, while 20-year-old Kenneth Taylor should also keep his place.
